1943, on an estate north of Firenze, ten‑year‑old orphan Penny cares for her little sister while staying with her aunt and uncle. A devout Catholic, she worries about her Jewish uncle’s soul and fears she’ll never please him. After the Allies land in Sicily and the Germans retreat, Penny fears for his life and appeals to his humanity, hoping her child’s logic can keep the sky from falling.

Her life spirals when her boyfriend, Mike, ends their relationship, and her best friend Amber suddenly leaves for Mexico. To make matters more overwhelming, her psychic mother, Mona, reveals a shocking truth: her father, Yogi, who she believed to be dead, is actually alive—a free-spirited, errant hippie photographer who has just arrived in town and wants to meet her.
