In 1960 Vienna, after Soviet tanks crush the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, American adventurer Michael Reynolds Richard Widmark is hired by an international espionage ring to smuggle a noted scholar and resistance leader, Professor Jansci Walter Rilla, out of Communist-ruled Hungary. Reynolds travels to Vienna to meet the professor’s daughter, Julia Sonja Ziemann, and convinces her to accompany him to Budapest. Once there, Reynolds is kidnapped by “freedom fighters” who take him to the professor’s secret headquarters, sparking a tense sequence of pursuit and shifting loyalties against a backdrop of spycraft and danger.

Meanwhile, one of Jansci’s trusted aides is captured by the Hungarian Secret Police and forced to reveal the professor’s hiding place. The alarm cascades quickly as Reynolds, Julia, and Jansci are rounded up and marched to Szarhaza Prison, where they face the brutal, methodical interrogation of the sadistic Colonel Hidas Howard Vernon. The mood inside the prison is grim and claustrophobic, with fear and pain underscoring the guards’ ruthless control and the prisoners’ fragile resolve.

Against the odds, a daring rescue comes from a resistance fighter known as The Count Charles Regnier, who outsmarts the Communist captors and enlists themselves into his custody. The plan hinges on deception and swift action, and for a perilous moment it seems a twist of fate might save them all. But the ruse is ultimately discovered, and The Count pays for his role with his life. In a race to freedom, Reynolds, Julia, and Jansci push toward the airport where a chartered plane awaits, hoping to slip away from Hungary before their pursuers close in.

The pursuit intensifies as Colonel Hidas storms the airfield, only to meet his end in a fatal accident on the runway, a sudden reversal that removes one final obstacle from their escape. With danger behind them and the immediate threat of capture dissolved, Reynolds, Julia, and Jansci finally reach safety, boarding the plane and leaving Hungary behind as the cold current of the borderlands fades away.

Throughout the ordeal, the film blends espionage intrigue with perilous action, painting a portrait of wartime loyalties, political pressure, and the fragile line between rescue and capture. The tension remains constant as alliances shift, captors become captives, and the pursuit of asylum drives every decision, culminating in a hard-won escape that restores a measure of freedom for those who dared to defy a regime.
