Joel Curtis Ted Donaldson is a young orphan living with his grandmother Aggie Curtis Jane Darwell on a weathered ranch, where every day carries the weight of unpaid bills and looming foreclosure. While wandering near the woods, he discovers an orphaned colt and names him Red, a horse with surprising promise and a stubborn streak. As Joel and Aggie face the reality that the farm could be sold to settle debts, a spark of hope appears when Joel befriends Andy McBride Robert Paige, a loyal ranch hand at the nearby Moresby Farms, who becomes an ally and mentor in this unexpected plan.

That night, Red slips from the barn and strides into the woods, where a bear attack tests his spirit; he escapes but returns exhausted, unfit to race the next day. Yet the following morning, Joel leads Red into the arena once more, racing him against Black Moor and turning the tables with a hard-won victory that convinces Moresby to purchase Red for a substantial sum, effectively saving Aggie’s ranch. At Aggie Curtis’s suggestion, Moresby makes Joel a co-owner of Red, a gesture that honors the boy’s dedication and the bond forged through countless miles of training and hope.
