Captain Ludvig Kahlen, Mads Mikkelsen, a Danish officer of humble birth, retires in 1755 after 25 years of service in the German Army with a meager pension. He wins a glimmer of possibility from the Royal Danish Court: permission to build a homestead on the barren Jutland moor and to cultivate land, with the hope of establishing a settlement and, in exchange, the privilege of a noble title and a manor. This bold plan sets him on a collision course with local power.

He soon clashes with Frederik Schinkel, a merciless local magistrate at the nearby Hald Manor who has been trying to monopolize ownership of the moorland. Schinkel does everything he can to deprive Kahlen of a workable workforce, forcing him to rely on covert labor. Kahlen secretly employs and harbors Johannes Eriksen, Morten Hee Andersen, and his wife Ann Barbara, Amanda Collin, two of Schinkel’s indentured serf farmers who fled mistreatment. After being guided to their camp by Anmai Mus, a Romani girl whom he catches attempting to steal from him, Kahlen also hires the Romani Travellers, despite the illegality of such labor. The tangled web of workers underscores the fraught, morally complicated path toward survival on the moor. Anmai Mus, Hagberg Melina, becomes a pivotal presence in these early efforts.

Schinkel’s cousin and betrothed Edel Helene, Kristine Kujath Thorp, resists marriage to him, though her father insists the union proceed for wealth unless another suitor can be found within a year. At a harvest ball, Edel secretly meets Kahlen and they share a kiss, sealing a delicate arrangement: if he can earn a noble title within the year, they will marry and she will gain an escape from an unwanted alliance with her cousin.

Towards the end of the party, Schinkel reveals he has recaptured Johannes while he was en route to the coast to fetch clay for Kahlen’s farm. The escaped serf meets a brutal fate as he is tortured to death with boiling water by his former master, witnessed by appalled guests. Kahlen carries Johannes’ body back to his wife; the sight of the boiled remains drives the Travellers to leave Kahlen’s employ, though Anmai remains behind to continue learning and working. Despite the brutal winter, with the help of Ann Barbara and Anmai, Kahlen manages to plant potatoes brought from Germany and harvest 80 sacks. In time, the three form an unofficial family, and a complex bond grows between Kahlen and Ann that deepens beyond mere necessity.

When the King learns of the harvest’s success, a settlement is ordered on Kahlen’s estate. He is named Royal Surveyor, and fifty settlers from Northern Germany are brought to the land. The new, wary people are superstitious, and Anmai keeps to the shadows, though she learns to read and survey under Kahlen’s tutelage.

Fury over Kahlen’s growing influence drives Schinkel to import convicts to assault the settlement, killing two settlers and destroying much of the livestock. In response, Kahlen and a small group of settlers retaliate, killing the assailants in their hideout. The attack forces Anmai away, and Ann also departs. Preisler, one of Schinkel’s officers, witnesses the killings and flees, while Schinkel and the other estate owners report the incident to the king’s cabinet. Ownership of the settlement is transferred to Schinkel, and Kahlen is arrested.

During torture at Schinkel’s estate, Ann slips in a poison-tinted plan: Edel secretly leads Schinkel to drink the tainted beverage. With him incapacitated, Ann enters and stabs Schinkel in the stomach and castrates him, a brutal turn of events that reshapes the power dynamic on the moor. Butler Bondo explains everything to the king’s cabinet; Kahlen is released, Ann is imprisoned for life, and Edel returns to her home in Norway. Kahlen then finds Anmai and vows to care for her, and the two begin living together on the farm.

Years pass, and an officer reveals to Kahlen that he has been granted the title of baron, along with a plan for 400 new settlers. Before this unfolds, a now-teenage Anmai leaves with a group of Romani travelers. Kahlen withdraws from the moor as the title is annulled, and he finally frees Ann from a traveling prisoner cart, after which they ride a horse toward the sea, leaving behind the life they built on the moor. Their story remains a testament to endurance, shifting loyalties, and the cost of power and title on a harsh landscape.
