It is 1988, and Melo, a Uruguayan town on the Brazilian border, waits for Pope John Paul II’s visit. Rumors swirl about a turnout that could be huge—hundreds, perhaps thousands of pilgrims. For Melo’s poor residents, the moment means more than a religious occasion: ideas of food lines, paper flags, souvenirs, and commemorative medals color the streets. The mood is buoyant, with locals hoping for both spiritual blessings and a bite of material happiness. Beto, a petty smuggler, believes he has found the perfect scheme: The Pope’s Toilet, a makeshift haven where the visitors can relieve themselves and perhaps cushion his empty pockets.

But the plan runs aground on practical snags: lack of funds and resistance from the local mobile customs officer. The promised scale—“60,000 to 200,000” Brazilians—never materializes. In the film’s postscript, only about 400 Brazilians arrive, gradually served by 387 stalls hawking food and trinkets. The narrative makes it clear that the visit ends up being a financial disaster for Melo rather than the windfall promised to its residents. The scheme costs him his daughter’s college fund, though she forgives him, and at least the toilet stands as a quirky, stubborn reminder of the misadventure.

Despite the postscript’s claim of keeping a good sense of humor at all costs, international media reported the Pope’s open-air mass in Melo, a town with about 39,000 inhabitants, drawing around 50,000 attendees.
