In Texas, a drifter facing the death penalty in just a few days clings to a fragile glimmer of hope: that his lawyers can compel the notorious killer Richard Ramirez to confess to the crime. His legal team includes Kit, Bellamy Young, who is tasked with traveling to California and visiting Richard Ramirez, Lou Diamond Phillips, in San Quentin State Prison in an attempt to persuade him to confess. She stays in a budget hotel and spends time in a bar during her downtime, trying to balance professional duty with personal reflection.

The murder in Texas took place before Ramirez’s first known killing, a detail that foregrounds the uneasy calculus of justice and memory. In the visitation room, Ramirez is uncooperative from the start, insisting that she remove her jewelry and repeatedly testing the boundaries of privacy and power. He presents himself as a Satanist, claiming that gold is offensive to Satan because it is God’s metal, and he uses taunts and sharp insults to try to unsettle the delegation. He remains stubbornly closed-off, and even when he hints at a potential private moment if she can prove she is truly his lawyer, his resistance hardly softens. He challenges her with probing questions about herself, teasing out her past to determine whether she deserves to know more about him.

As the narrative reveals, the case threads back into Kit’s own history: as a child, she lived in the same neighborhood as one of Ramirez’s notorious crimes, and that exposure fueled a fixation that helped steer her toward a career in law. Her obsession with Ramirez’s crime spree becomes a quiet engine behind her determined pursuit of justice, shaping both her ambition and her empathy for the people caught in the cycle of violence.
