Bart Bromley leads a quiet, tightly structured life with his mother, navigating social situations through a lens shaped by Asperger syndrome. To cope with social awkwardness, he secretly hides cameras in a room at the hotel where he works as a night desk clerk, watching live feeds and studying the guests he records in order to imitate their speech and mannerisms. This meticulous routine becomes his way of connecting with people, albeit from a careful remove, as he practices conversation and behavior in front of the camera.
On a routine night shift, he becomes fixated on a guest named Karen who has just checked in. After his shift ends, he buys ice cream, returns home, and continues to monitor Karen’s movements. He witnesses Karen letting an unknown man into her room; after they argue, the man turns violent and a gun falls from Karen’s purse. Bart, moved to intervene, heads to the hotel in an effort to rescue her. He enters through a side door, and soon afterwards his coworker Jack hears a gunshot. Jack rushes into Karen’s room and discovers Karen dead and Bart seated on the bed. While Jack calls emergency services, Bart removes the hidden cameras but accidentally leaves behind a storage card.
The next day, Detective Espada questions Bart, who claims he went home after buying ice cream and then returned to the hotel to retrieve his wallet. Espada suspects a lie, since the ice cream purchase would have required a wallet. Bart re-watches the room recording and spots a crucial clue: the man Karen met bears a tattoo of a bird on his arm.
Bart is reassigned to a second hotel by his employer. On his first night there, he meets Andrea Rivera, who recognizes his Asperger’s and flirts with him as she checks into a room. The following day, Bart discovers a missing storage card, a detail Espada later uncovers. He begins to plant cameras in Andrea’s room and later shares a kiss with her near the pool, blurring lines between observation and personal connection.
As the days unfold, Bart embellishes his appearance—getting a haircut, buying a new suit, a new car, and a fresh cologne—and makes another attempt to visit Andrea, only to find her in bed with the unknown man from Karen’s room, the very man he had noticed via his tattoo. He returns home to find police have seized his computer equipment and cameras. He tells Espada that his hard drives are empty because he erased all recordings before the police arrived; however, after Espada leaves, Bart retrieves a hidden hard drive that contains a copy of the Karen recording.
The unknown man is revealed to be Karen’s husband, Nick, a detective who has been having an affair with Andrea and wants her to kill Bart so he cannot be identified to the police. As Bart watches Andrea in her room via the cameras, he sees Nick begin to beat her. He rushes to the hotel and enters Andrea’s room just as Nick leaves, then shows Andrea the hidden cameras. At Nick’s house, he reveals the recording from Karen’s room to Andrea, and she breaks down in tears before falling asleep in Bart’s bed.
The next morning, Andrea is gone, along with the hard drive that contained the Karen recording, and the gun from Karen’s purse is left on Bart’s bed. Nick and Andrea drive away with the evidence, but the police arrive at Bart’s house and arrest them after a traffic stop. Bart walks through a local mall, practicing the conversational speech and body language he has learned from his recordings, testing whether he can navigate the world on his own terms once again.
