Ann Darrow, Jodi Benson, a down-on-her-luck actress hoping for a break, is approached by film director Carl Denham and offered a lead role in a daring new film. They board the Venture and set sail to begin production, joined on the deck by Rick Jason Gray-Stanford, a friendly sailor, and his monkey Chips, who quickly become part of the crew. The voyage is led by the Venture’s Captain Richard Newman, who keeps a steady course as the ship crosses unknown waters. As the ship draws nearer to Skull Island, Ann’s nerves mix with a growing sense of awe and danger.
On Skull Island, a tense encounter with the island’s native guardians foreshadows the terror to come. In a grim ritual, Ann is presented to Kong, the colossal guardian of the island, and is carried off into the jungle. What follows is a perilous trek through dense vegetation where Ann, aided by a handful of unlikely allies, faces a sequence of spectacular threats. They contend with a roaring Tyrannosaurus, a soaring Pterodactylus, and a slithering Gigantophis, while Jack Driscoll Randy Hamilton arrives just in time to rescue Ann from danger during a tense cargo mishap. Kong’s reach and strength are overwhelming, and the crew’s attempts to intervene are desperate but brave. At a crucial moment, a gas bomb renders Kong unconscious, allowing Ann a narrow window of safety.
Back in civilization, Kong’s captivity becomes a nightmare of a different scale. He escapes from Denham’s theater and triggers a devastating rampage through New York City, turning the urban landscape into a dreamlike, dangerous playground for a creature out of myth. Kong finally seizes Ann atop the Empire State Building, with Jack in fierce pursuit. A squadron of biplanes dives in, their gunfire tearing into the night sky but missing more often than it hits. When the birds are exhausted, two blimps collide in midair, trailing a long net that stretches between them in a dramatic attempt to trap Kong. The plan succeeds in trapping him, yet the net tears under the strain as Kong strains toward Ann. He lunges, the net rips free, and Kong plummets toward the streets—though the fall does not end his legend, as he miraculously survives the fall and disappears into the catacombs of the city’s history.
In the end, Kong’s fate remains shrouded in ambiguity. Depending on the version, the mighty beast is either allowed to roam a vast tract of land in southern New Jersey or released on a private island, leaving audiences with a haunting sense of awe and tragedy for a creature who bridged two worlds and became a symbol of nature’s power and fragility.
