Private Shane Gulliver [Matthew McNulty] of the 1st Battalion, Northdale Rifles marches toward a court-martial, setting a tense, morally fraught tone for the story. The film then shifts to Basra, Iraq, where Gulliver arrives with fellow soldier Mark Tate [Gerard Kearns] and their commanding officer, Major Godber [Shaun Dingwall], who urges them to treat the local population with respect. The squad heads out on patrol, quickly finding themselves under attack as insurgents ambush them; in the chaos, they witness the death of their CO while they struggle to rescue a Territorial Army private who is overwhelmed by shock in a Land Rover.

They receive reports that the insurgents came from a village nearby, and the tension between duty and anger begins to simmer. Back at base, the unit arrests several men suspected of insurgent activity and brings them back for processing. They are told to hand the prisoners over to the Royal Military Police (RMP), but the combination of grief and frustration over Major Godber’s death pushes them toward a brutal, illegal reckoning. The group beats, tortures, and even sexually abuses the detainees; amid the abuse, Gulliver secretly photographs the proceedings, capturing a record that will later haunt him. The atmosphere grows increasingly dangerous as the line between soldier and criminal blurs, and the men’s actions begin to threaten the unit’s sense of honor and discipline.

When they return home, Gulliver shows the photographs to his girlfriend, a moment that exposes his duplicity and strain. She decides to report him to civilian police, initiating a chain of consequences that reaches the Royal Military Police and upends their lives. Corporal Gant [Shaun Dooley] orders Tate to join in the abuse, and Tate is bullied into participating, compounding the group’s moral rot. Gulliver’s conscience, already tangled, becomes a political weapon in the months that follow as the trio faces repercussions for their actions. The fallout culminates in a court-martial for Gulliver and Tate, while Gant escapes with a fine, exposing how fragile the veneer of military justice can be under pressure.

Tate’s torment yields a devastating turn when he takes his own life after the proceedings begin, laying bare the personal cost of war crimes and the collapse of brotherhood under stress. In the final phase of the story, Gulliver confronts the courtroom with a reluctant confession: he pleads guilty to the charges but chooses to name Gant and the others for their complicity, offering a grim counterpoint to the idea of a clean, single-victim accountability. Back in his cell, Gulliver is beaten by fellow soldiers, a brutal reminder that punishment can ripple through a unit in unpredictable and painful ways, and the film closes with him enduring a harsh, uncompromising prison sentence as a stark testament to the consequences of choices made under pressure.
