The Love Patient 2011

Paul [Benjamin Lutz] is a professional ad executive who, roughly a year after his painful breakup with Brad [John Werskey], wrestles with the sting of losing and the pull of pride. He is not one to beg or grovel, so he crafts an elaborate scheme designed to earn Brad’s pity, and perhaps rekindle a spark of affection and love. The plan hinges on manipulating Brad’s perceptions rather than changing his own behavior, and it sets in motion a chain of complications that threaten to swallow him whole.

Brad has moved on and is now dating Ted [Jackson Palmer], a bisexual former Bowflex model who represents a different chapter in Brad’s life. Meanwhile, Paul reaches out to a trusted doctor, Burt Halper, to help him out of a precarious financial bind. Paul agrees to let Dr. Burt Halper [Mike Pfaff] diagnose him with cancer and prescribe a sham treatment, a ruse that would legitimize Paul’s sudden “illness” and justify Brad’s renewed concern. The arrangement works in the short term, and the word of Paul’s supposed illness travels to Brad, prompting Brad to step back into the orbit of his ex.

As Brad draws near, his ex’s world begins to resemble a small, makeshift hospital. Paul’s apartment fills with activity as his mother moves in to assist, and the scene gradually morphs into a staged care environment that is meant to elicit sympathy. The situation becomes increasingly tangled as Paul’s sister, ever curious and intrusive, follows the strange thread of events and starts to notice that something is not quite right.
