When he learns that Liu Bei has sought shelter under Yuan Shao, Guan Yu negotiates with Cao Cao to secure the release of Liu Bei’s family. A pivotal revelation arrives with shocking clarity: it is Emperor Xian, not Cao Cao, who issues the order to kill Guan Yu. This twist reorients Guan Yu’s choices and deepens the moral weight of his struggle. Before he can reunite with Liu Bei, he confronts a brutal dilemma about whether to remain by Cao Cao’s side or to pursue a more personal fidelity that seems increasingly fragile.

Qi Lan’s maneuvering continues to complicate the path forward.
