King Simba and Queen Nala welcome their newborn daughter Kiara to the Pride Lands, presenting her to the gathered animals. As Kiara grows into a curious, headstrong cub, she chafes under her father’s protective rules. To keep her safe, Simba enlists his old friends Timon and Pumbaa to accompany her on adventures, though he worries about her safety.
One day Kiara slips away into the barren Outlands—the exile-inhabited lands of Scar’s followers, the Outsiders—where she meets another cub, Kovu, chosen by Scar to be his heir. The two cubs quickly form a bond after narrowly escaping a crocodile-infested river. When Simba discovers them at play, he misreads the situation as trouble and confronts Kovu, while Zira, the Outsiders’ leader and Kovu’s mother, looks on with her own plans. Simba later shares a lesson with Kiara about the duties of leadership and the idea that every creature is connected to one another.
Zira is secretly training Kovu to kill Simba and seize the throne, hoping to use the friendship with Kiara as a pathway to power. Meanwhile, the spirit of Mufasa watches over from beyond, nudging the two young lions toward a future where the Pridelanders and the Outsiders might be united.
Years pass, and an adolescent Kovu rescues Kiara after his older siblings Nuka and Vitani ignite a wildfire during her first solo hunt. Seeing Kiara, Simba finally agrees to let Kovu join the Pride in a fragile step toward peace, even as he remains wary of the outsider’s true motives. Kiara and Kovu grow closer as he trains her in hunting, and he begins to question Scar’s plan, stating he is not Scar’s actual son.
Rafiki leads the lions into a jungle retreat and helps them fall in love by teaching them about upendi — a Swahili term for love. At Nala’s urging, Kiara and Kovu share a night with the rest of the Pride, but Vitani secretly informs Zira that Kovu failed in his covert mission.
The next morning, Simba shows Kovu the Pride Lands and reveals the truth about Scar. The Outsiders ambush Simba and trick him into thinking Kovu betrayed him; Nuka is killed, and Simba narrowly escapes. In a pivotal moment, Kovu defies Zira and pleads with Simba for forgiveness, but he is exiled. Kiara helps Simba see his own irrational fears and sets out to find Kovu, refusing to abandon their path toward unity.
The pair reunites and returns to the Pride Lands, persuading both factions to lay down their arms and live as one community again. Zira makes a final, deadly bid for control, but falls to her death when she is thwarted. In the end, Simba welcomes the Outsiders back, and during a celebration on Pride Rock, he glimpses his father’s spirit congratulating him, signaling a hopeful future for all of the Pride Lands.
