Tan Hai-chi steps into the center of a brutal conflict that begins with a prologue of raw kicking mastery. A ground‑kicking expert tries to end him, and though Tan defeats and spares the attacker, the fight continues and ends only when Tan must kill in self‑defense. The killer’s brother, Peng Fung, vows revenge and begins a long pursuit that casts a shadow over Tan Hai-chi’s every move.
Raised by a single, affluent father, Phoenix(/actor/ha-kwong-li) is spoiled and headstrong, carrying a chip on her shoulder that makes her resistant to discipline. Her loyal but bumbling servant, Chin Pan, enables her worst tendencies as she dodges the plan to train under kung fu master Mo Ku-fung. When Mo decides that he will leave if Phoenix and Chin Pan cannot best him, he proposes his replacement: a stern, formidable instructor who will push them to their limits — a man named Tan Hai-chi.
Despite Phoenix’s immaturity, she shows a good heart by stepping in to defend a young girl who is being assaulted in town. She fights off the aggressors but, after the dust settles, Tan Hai-chi intervenes and forces her to confront the consequences of her actions. Unaware she is staring at her future master, she clashes with him, and her raw skills are no match for his control and discipline. When Phoenix and Chin arrive home, they learn that their new instructor is indeed Tan Hai-chi, a revelation that temporarily unsettles her—yet also begins to bend her stubborn will toward respect and training.
The village soon tests Phoenix in a brutal way: a bully named Ding Dong targets a fortune teller, and Phoenix confronts him with a dangerous confidence. Though she defeats Ding Dong, his brother Dong Dong returns with back‑up and overpowers both Phoenix and Chin Pan. Tan Hai-chi watches with a quiet smile, using the moment to humble Phoenix and secure his position as her true master. The brothers flee to Peng Fung, who accepts their report and vows to test Tan Hai-chi’s supposed skills.
Peng Fung is not content to wait. He breaks into Mo Ku-fung’s home to learn Tan Hai-chi’s whereabouts and, when found, kills Mo Ku-fung and his wife rather than give up the chase. The news of the master’s location travels quickly, and Peng Fung eventually locates Tan Hai-chi with the help of the two bullies, Ding Dong and Dong Dong, who spread the word to Peng Fung’s henchmen.
With the truth about Tan Hai-chi clear to her, Phoenix bows to her destiny and commits fully to training. She shows real progress, taking the fight to Ding Dong and Dong Dong, sending them retreating. Peng Fung catches wind of Phoenix’s growth and steps forward with a direct challenge to Tan Hai-chi. He warns Tan not to involve Phoenix, fearing she may be harmed, but the danger has already taken root.
The climactic confrontation arrives as Peng Fung reveals the full measure of his power, nearly ending Tan Hai-chi with his secret “nine bird style.” In a crucial breach of trust, Phoenix disobeys her master’s order and rushes to join the fight, fighting at Peng Fung’s side with a resolve that matches his ferocity. The duel escalates into a life‑and‑death struggle where loyalty, discipline, and a student’s courage collide, and the outcome rests on Tan Hai-chi’s mastery and Phoenix’s newfound devotion.
