The tale opens with the witch, voiced by Julie Walters, inviting a visitor into her cottage and presenting several spell options. When her crow, sung by Steve Purcell, nudges toward the bear spell, she shifts to a tale of a prince who becomes Mor’du, the demon bear.
In a kingdom once ruled by a wise and beloved king, the story traces the lineage of four sons. Each of the younger three bears a distinct gift: the youngest is wise, the third is compassionate, and the second is just. The eldest, however, is defined by strength more than character. Upon the king’s autumn death, he makes a radical choice: instead of bequeathing all power to the eldest, he divides rule equally among the brothers, hoping unity will keep the realm prosperous. This decision unsettles the eldest, who refuses the share and declares himself the sole ruler, shattering the family peace by breaking the sacred stone that bound them together. The divide sows seeds of envy and sparks a war that forever alters the kingdom’s fate.
Even with a formidable army at his command, the prince and his brothers remain locked in a stalemate. Seeking a way to alter his fortune, the prince discovers a menhir ring hidden in the woods. The will-o’-the-wisps guide him to the edge of a dark loch and a distant cottage where the witch lives. Desperate to turn the tide of battle, he persuades her to forge a spell granting the strength of ten men, offering his signet ring in exchange. The witch warns him about the price of such power, presenting a stark choice: either to fulfill his dark wish or heal the broken bonds of his family. She cautions that the road ahead will demand something more than raw strength.
To gain his advantage, the prince stages a hollow truce to bring his brothers before him, and when they resist, he drinks the spell. The power rushes through him, but it also alters him in ways he did not foresee: he is transformed into a great black bear. Instead of using his newfound might to mend the rift, his thirst for control eclipses all else, and he turns on his own kin, killing his brothers with a ferocity born of pride.
With his human soldiers unable to recognize the beast before them, fear turns to aggression. The prince, now Mor’du, believes he is betrayed by those who once followed him, and he retaliates by attacking and slaughtering many of the survivors. The resulting collapse of the brothers’ kingdoms leaves Mor’du to wander the land as a lone, unfeeling predator, his human intellect overridden by a wild bloodlust that drives him to terrorize wherever he roams.
The witch brings the tale to a close and offers the spell as a cake to the guest, who turns out to be Wee Dingwall, a figure who entered seeking nothing more than water. Dingwall panics at the offer and, realizing the danger of the magic, retreats in haste, fleeing the cottage.
mend the bond, torn by pride
The narrative weaves a cautionary arc about power, family ties, and the consequences of choices made in the name of strength. The world it describes is one where a once-noble lineage fractures under the weight of ambition, leaving a demon bear to haunt the lands that should have known peace. The recurring tension between duty and desire, loyalty and conquest, is framed through the witch’s storytelling, the crow’s nudge toward a darker path, and the innocent interruption of Wee Dingwall, who never expects to be handed a fable that might change his own life.
