The Last Conflict 1988

Interpol officer Dickson Kwan [Donnie Yen] is dispatched to Hong Kong to investigate a web of fake passport forgery cases, where he teams up with officer Pau Sei and with Lau Ting Kin [Stephen Chow]. Their different investigative approaches quickly spark friction between the two investigators, as each man pushes for a distinct path toward truth and justice in a bustling city that tests their boundaries.

In the heat of an arrest operation, Dickson saves Sei’s life, and the long-standing tensions begin to give way to a renewed, if cautious, sense of camaraderie. Sei has a daughter Eva Bau [Nadia Chan Chung-Ling], who strongly opposes her father’s police career and worries about the dangers that come with it. Dickson finds himself drawn to Eva, and his pursuit of her grows into something more personal, even as Eva’s feelings are tangled with fear and disapproval about the risks his line of work invites. She admires his courage, but she remains wary of the price he pays and the life he leads, ultimately choosing to keep him at arm’s length.

The turning point arrives just after Sei’s retirement, when he is killed in an ambush by Tong Hak [Francis Ng Chun-Yu], who mistakes Sei for Dickson after discovering a message Tong had left for him. Even without solid proof, Dickson senses Tong’s guilt and refuses to abandon the case, defying orders to leave Hong Kong in his relentless hunt for the truth. The pursuit culminates at a construction site, where Tong is shot dead by Lau Ting Kin, who had been drawn into the trap he laid, using Eva under the ruse of a deteriorating alliance.

As the dust settles, Dickson chooses to step away from the city he tried so hard to protect, leaving Hong Kong behind while the people around him—Eva, Sei’s memory, and the rest of their circle—continue with their lives in the city that shaped them. In the end, the film threads a portrait of duty, danger, and personal sacrifice set against Hong Kong’s kinetic, layered backdrop, where loyalties are tested and the line between protector and prey can blur in an instant.
