The Last Mountain 2022

The film presents the poignant tale of 30-year-old climber Tom Ballard, who vanished while tackling one of the deadliest mountains in the Himalayas in February 2019. Tom was the son of celebrated mountaineer Alison Hargreaves, who tragically lost her life on K2 in 1995. Both mother and son, recognized among the greatest climbers ever, faced similar fates at nearly the same age, within the same mountain range, and while pursuing their passion for climbing. They now remain forever encased in the ice of the high Himalayas.

The enduring impact of Tom’s disappearance is felt deeply by his sister Kate and their father Jim, who are left to grapple with this profound tragedy. The film takes us back to 1995 when Jim Ballard, wanting to say farewell to his wife, brought his young children—6-year-old Tom and 4-year-old Kate—on an expedition to K2’s base camp. This emotional journey resulted in a BBC documentary titled Alison’s Last Mountain.

Now, The Last Mountain shifts the focus to Kate Ballard, who embarks on a parallel journey to pay tribute to her brother at Nanga Parbat. Utilizing archival footage from 1995, alongside Tom’s remarkable recordings captured in the days leading up to his disappearance, the documentary delves into Tom’s motivations for continuing his climb with Italian climber Daniele Nardi, despite the fact that the other two members of their expedition had turned back. Tom had firmly held the belief that he should “listen” to the mountain, treating climbing as an act of becoming part of a “moving piece of rock or ice.”

The film includes deeply personal interviews with those who were affected by this tragedy, including: Jim Ballard, Alison Hargreaves’s widower; Kate Ballard, Tom’s sister; Stefy, Tom’s girlfriend; and Karim Hayat, who departed the expedition expressing his fear of losing his life there. Additionally, Alex Txikon, who led the search for Tom and Daniele, shares his recollections of finding their bodies.
