On the island city of Palma de Mallorca, David Norton promotes his latest book, The Kovak Box, before a small private gathering of European fans. The occasion unfolds with a quiet, controlled atmosphere, where Norton’s celebrity and polished demeanor mingle with a subtly patronizing undertone from the hotel staff. A single audience member bears a distinctive Russian Mafia arm tattoo, a detail that threads a sense of menace through the otherwise uneventful evening.

Later in the evening, Norton’s fiancée, Jane Graham, receives an anonymous phone call and makes a fatal decision, leaping from the hotel balcony. The tragedy doesn’t end there, as Norton later learns that a nearby patient, Silvia Méndez, also dies under similarly mysterious circumstances that same night. Silvia is a young nightclub debutante with no known enemies or connections to the American couple, which deepens the mystery and raises the stakes for Norton. While Silvia recovers, a shadowy figure tries to stab her in the back of the neck, but the assailant escapes after a struggle. Silvia then reunites with Norton, who finds himself being pursued by unknown assailants as well.
