The King of Marvin Gardens 1972

David Staebler, Jack Nicholson, is a depressive living with his grandfather, Charles LaVine, in Philadelphia, where he hosts a late-night radio talk show, while his brother Jason Staebler, Bruce Dern, is an extroverted con man who works for gang boss Lewis, Scatman Crothers, in Atlantic City, where he shares a cramped hotel suite with two women: Sally, Ellen Burstyn, a former beauty queen and prostitute, and her stepdaughter Jessica, Julia Anne Robinson. After no contact for eighteen months, Jason invites David to Atlantic City for a chance to make their fortune. David arrives and, after being bailed out of jail, Jason persuades him to stay on in the hotel suite with the two women, laying out a reckless scheme for a casino in Hawaii and insisting that they will share the girls when they go there.

As tensions rise, Jason pushes to involve a Japanese syndicate of investors in his plans, while the skeptical David questions the feasibility of the scheme and chafes at Jason’s habit of belittling his brother’s dark, lonely life. Meanwhile, Sally tries to groom Jessica for a beauty-queen career, only to witness Jessica developing a mutual attraction with Jason, which further unsettles the fragile balance among them. Sally, increasingly neurotic over losing her looks, burns her glamorous clothes, cuts off her hair, and discards her cosmetics, clinging to a last shred of glamour as the situation spirals. Jason begins packing to leave for Hawaii and tells Sally that he is going with Jessica, insisting that she cannot come. Sally responds with threats to shoot either David or Jason, and when Jason mocks her, she shoots him dead in a moment of blind rage and despair. David then escorts his brother’s corpse home to Philadelphia by train, a somber journey that forces him to confront his own despair and the collapse of a precarious dream.

Across these desperate, entwined lives, the film paints a tense, dark portrait of ambition and vulnerability, where loyalty frays, dreams collide, and violence becomes a tragic punctuation mark on a misfit family’s attempt to rewrite fortune.
