Lisa Spinelli, a kindergarten teacher hailing from Staten Island, finds herself grappling with profound dissatisfaction in her life. She is involved in a loving yet passionless marriage with her husband Grant, while her relationships with her teenage children, Josh and Lainie, seem increasingly distant. In an attempt to find solace, Lisa attends a weekly poetry class led by Simon, although her contributions are often dismissed as derivative.
Among her students, Jimmy stands out, often picked up late from school by his babysitter. One day, while waiting for his ride, he creates a poem that Lisa overhears. Inspired, Lisa takes a bold step and reads Jimmy’s poem in class, where both her classmates and Simon express admiration for her newfound talent. Convinced that Jimmy is a true prodigy, she commits herself to nurturing his remarkable abilities.
As her focus shifts to Jimmy, Lisa enlists the help of his babysitter, Becca, a part-time actress, to document the poems Jimmy recites. However, she quickly becomes uneasy with Becca’s treatment of Jimmy, perceiving it as an obstacle to his advancement. In a gesture of support, Lisa provides Jimmy with her phone number, encouraging him to reach out anytime he has a new poem.
A turning point occurs when Simon invites Lisa to a poetry reading in Manhattan, where she is expected to present two of her own poems to an audience. In a moment of intimacy, their relationship takes a passionate turn, fueled by Simon’s fascination with Lisa’s artistic potential.
When Lisa meets Jimmy’s father, Nikhil, to discuss his burgeoning talent, she learns that while he appreciates his son’s intelligence, he desires a more conventional upbringing for him. Lisa persuades Nikhil to dismiss Becca and offers her time to supervise Jimmy after school, a proposal he happily accepts. However, disregarding Nikhil’s wishes for Jimmy to attend baseball practice, Lisa takes him to the poetry reading, where his work is met with enthusiasm. This, however, ignites Simon’s ire upon discovering Lisa’s deceit regarding the authorship of the poems, leading him to expel her from his class.
The following day, filled with shame and distress, Lisa faces Nikhil’s anger for her earlier deception and her failure to return Jimmy home. Reacting impulsively, she goes to Jimmy’s new kindergarten and ends up kidnapping him, driving them to a motel near a northern beach where she dreams of escaping to Canada. Although Jimmy initially appears to accept this plan, he ultimately calls 911 while Lisa showers. In a desperate attempt to convince him, Lisa sobs, expressing her belief that the world will never appreciate his talent. However, despite her attempts at persuasion, she provides him with the motel’s address.
When the police arrive, they arrest Lisa and place Jimmy in the front seat of their squad car. As he sits there, he tries to convey his creativity by saying, > “I have a poem,” yet his voice goes unheard amidst the chaos of the moment.
