Hugo Archibald, Lance Guest, is a busy doctor who brings home a wide variety of exotic animals, the latest being a curious chimpanzee named Jennie Bella. His wife Lea Archibald, Sheila Kelley, does not want Jennie and says she causes trouble, but the children quickly warm to her presence, and Jennie becomes a bright and compelling addition to the household.
Their son Andrew Archibald, Alex D. Linz, forms a close bond with Jennie, sharing his own loves—baseball and comic books—and discovering that Jennie offers a unique, comforting companionship when tensions rise between his father and him. Jennie’s capacity to learn and connect through sign language becomes a central thread in the family’s daily life, weaving a bridge between human and animal worlds and giving Andrew a new way to communicate with the pet who understands him in ways others do not.
Dr. Pamela Prentiss, Sheryl Lee Ralph, arrives to train with Jennie and brings a clinical perspective that clashes with Hugo and Lea’s more permissive care. She challenges the way Jennie is handled, insisting on different methods of teaching and interaction that Jennie herself doesn’t fully grasp, while Lea discovers a way she understands that still respects Jennie’s intelligence and personality.
The conflict intensifies as Dr. Prentiss tries to persuade Hugo to admit Jennie into the science lab where she works, arguing for a more controlled environment. Hugo resists, hoping to preserve the family’s connection with Jennie and keep her in a home setting. Jennie’s adventures take a troubling turn when she begins to cause trouble around the neighborhood—taking mail from the mailman and munching on neighbors’ tulips—leading to escalating concerns from the community and a formal court case.
Ultimately, Jennie is admitted into a science lab, and the family faces the possibility of losing her from their daily lives. After weighing the options, they decide that the best path is to return Jennie to Africa, the place where she was found, hoping to restore balance and respect for her origins. In the end, the experience of loving Jennie brings the Archibald family closer, teaching them patience, understanding, and a renewed sense of unity as they navigate the line between care, science, and family.
