The Hill 2023

In a small Texan town, a young Rickey Hill, Colin Ford, wears leg braces due to a degenerative spinal disease, but he loves baseball and is widely regarded as a batting prodigy. James Hill, Dennis Quaid, his strict father and a pastor, discourages Rickey from the sport, hoping to shield him from injuries and urging him to pursue preaching instead.

The family is evicted from their home and forced to move to Oklahoma. When their car breaks down, a kindly family offers James a position at a local church, setting the stage for a new chapter in their lives.

Rickey struggles to adjust to the unfamiliar town, until he encounters a group of children playing baseball. The pitcher taunts him about his disability until Rickey finally connects on a pitch, discovering a spark that draws him to the game. He tries to join the local baseball team, but parental permission is required, so his brother Robert, Mason Gillett, forges their father’s signature. When James learns of the deception, he lectures both boys for lying, yet he stops short of harming Robert. Rickey reassures him that he can pursue both preaching and baseball, and the bond between father and son begins to shift.

A few years later, Rickey becomes one of the top high school players, but Major League Baseball scouts remain hesitant. Ray, his boss at a part-time job who watched Rickey bat as a child, arranges for scout Red Murff, Scott Glenn, to attend his upcoming game.

Rickey faces the local bully once more, delivering a go-ahead home run, but trips on a sprinkler while attempting to catch the game-winning out. A doctor diagnoses a fractured ankle and severed leg tendons, seemingly ending his playing career. Fundraising efforts to cover treatment fall short, but Ray helps him secure the rest needed to be ready for an MLB tryout. James forbids him from participating, leaving Rickey torn and disheartened, much to the disappointment of his childhood sweetheart Gracie, Mila Harris.

When Rickey’s grandmother falls ill and urges James to allow Rickey to chase baseball before she dies, a renewed determination takes hold. Rickey removes the cast and trains again, this time with Robert by his side.

On the first day of the tryout, Rickey runs drills with other prospects in front of scouts, including Murff. He struggles with fielding and baserunning, and a scout nearly dismisses him until Rickey convinces him to let him bat. Most of his hits land near Murff in the nearby park. The tryout ends quietly, and Rickey heads home, only to return for his glove after finding a motivating message from James.

Rickey returns to the park, where Murff challenges him to be the designated hitter for both teams in the prospects game. During the game, Murff pressures every pitcher to retire Rickey, but he belts hits off all of them with ease. While James delivers a sermon at church, he expresses regret for not fully supporting his son. After Rickey completes ten at-bats, Murff calls in major leaguer Jimmy Hammer to pitch against him; Hammer hits him in the rib, and Murff quietly instructs him to take first base, but Rickey stays in and drives the next pitch for a hit.

Following the game, Rickey and James reunite in the outfield, and James concedes that he will have to “get used” to Rickey’s newfound career, signaling a new family dynamic and shared dream.

In an epilogue, Rickey signs with the Montreal Expos in 1975 and spends four seasons in the minor leagues before his spine finally gives out. The story closes on a note of perseverance, legacy, and the enduring bond between a father who learns to trust his son and a young player who refuses to let fear define his future.
