The danger becomes immediate and personal, forcing Cassie to seek help beyond the confines of the classroom and the neighborhood streets.

Desperate for guidance, Cassie returns to the mysterious store and finds that the Stranger travels the world each Halloween in search of someone who loves to scare others—the kind of person who can unwittingly unleash a powerful entity by reading the book. They realize they need a very specific kind of catalyst to turn the creature against itself.

A crucial piece of the plan involves blood from a roast that Cassie’s mother, Eileen Keller Michelle Duffy, made. The idea is to anoint the Evil Thing with this blood in a way that will trigger the two heads to attack one another, potentially forcing the monster to devour itself. Alongside the strategic move, the Evil Thing’s babies hatch, complicating the rescue attempt as the group scrambles to keep Priscilla and the pizza deliveryman safe.

Max, bolstered by Cassie’s encouragement, must confront his fears to play his part in the plan.
