John Welles, a Groundstar space project technician, launches a high-stakes attempt to steal the miniaturized rocket-fuel system plans from the project’s computer facility. The plan goes wrong, the device explodes, and the blast leaves him badly disfigured in the act he himself set. He barely escapes with his life and staggers to the vacation home of Nicole Devon, where she finds him and calls for help. An ambulance arrives, he is taken into surgery, and his body is rebuilt with plastic surgery while a hard-edged government official, Tuxan, interrogates him. Throughout the procedure and questioning, [John Welles] insists he has no memory of the crime or his life before the incident.
