During World War II, William Potts, Will Hay, is revealed to be a perfect double for a German spy the British have just captured, and Potts is flown to Nazi Germany to impersonate that operative. He is tasked with seeking out and returning details about a new German secret weapon, a mission that sets him on a precarious path behind enemy lines.
On arrival, Potts finds himself placed in charge of a group of seemingly fanatical young students who are being groomed as spies to operate against Britain. He tries to undermine their zeal by teaching them that the proper British way to salute a great leader is to flash the V-sign, and they dutifully direct these gestures toward a portrait of the Führer with surprising enthusiasm. At a formal gathering intended to reveal information about the weapon, a gas-fired bomb, Potts’s plan backfires: he gets blind drunk and ends up confessing that he is a British agent.
Fortune twists in his favor when a number of the Nazi youths turn out to be sympathetic Austrians, and they assist him in obtaining the secret he seeks. With their help, Potts and his new allies seize a plane and set course for Britain, only to crash the craft into a tree outside the War Office in London.
