In a sun-drenched Florida hotel, the delicate balance of routine quickly sizzles into comic chaos as the house detective’s wife is an incessant flirt, stirring trouble with a wink and a smile. Shirley Grey brings a sly spark to this lively meddling, while the hotel’s wider ensemble—shared glances, whispered schemes, and late-night miscommunications—keeps the pace bright and breezy. Amid the bustle, the Lady Walking Dog, Harriet MacGibbon, drifts through with a keen, observant presence that threads through every scene.

Deep Sea McGurk, John Dunsmuir, corners Walter, the Desk Clerk, Johnny Kane, in a bid to locate J. Effingham Bellweather, only to find the staffer unavailable and the hotel’s rhythm undeterred. McGurk then dictates a hot, angry note for Bellweather, insisting on collecting the $40 he claims is owed, a small but sharp seed of the farce to unfold.

Bellweather himself arrives—slick, self-assured, and unbothered by conventional rules. In a brisk exchange, the desk clerk hands him the note from McGurk, which Bellweather casually tears up, murmuring, “Silly little girl.” > “Silly little girl,” he murmurs.

With a confident swagger, Bellweather offers to teach the house detective’s wife how to play golf, turning the course into a stage for his individualistic, wry commentary. On the greens, the con artist keeps up a running narration of the game while never actually striking the ball, his performance interrupted again and again by the caddy’s squeaking shoes, papers fluttering under the wind, and a pie the Allen Wood–portrayed The Caddy has somehow brought along, which ends up in an unintended encounter with Bellweather’s feet.

As the round continues, the sheriff and the house detective emerge from the edge of the course, ready to arrest Bellweather for a long list of absurd offenses—ranging from “eating spaghetti in public” to “jumping board bill in seventeen lunatic asylums,” to “failure to pay installments on a strait-jacket,” and even “possessing a skunk.” The scene tightens into a closing spectacle of comic timing, with Bellweather’s final golf demonstration—the wrists kept close together on the club—precisely when the handcuffs snap shut, and he is led away to face the farce’s send-off.
