The Goat Life 2024

In Saudi Arabia, Najeeb Muhammed, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and Hakim, two Malayali immigrants, travel with visas arranged by an acquaintance, Sreekumar, in search of a better life. Their plans falter almost immediately at the airport, where a local Arab misleads them and ferries them to a distant place under false pretenses. After a tense, exhausting journey, the two are torn apart, and Najeeb is left to endure a grueling life as a desert goat herder.

Brutal heat, isolation, and the quiet threat of danger define Najeeb’s days, and he bears witness to the death of a fellow goatherd, a stark reminder of the precariousness of his situation. Years of hardship pass, and a glimmer of hope appears when he is reunited with Hakim, who introduces him to Ibrahim Khadiri, a Somalian goatherd with intimate knowledge of the desert and the routes that could lead to escape. Together they seize a fragile opportunity during Khafeel’s daughter’s wedding, slipping away into the endless sands.

Their trek tests every limit as they struggle to find food, water, and direction under a merciless sun. The group is fractured by tragedy: Hakim dies, and Najeeb’s own survival odds shrink to a perilous edge. Khadiri himself eventually vanishes into the vast horizons, leaving Najeeb alone with his memories and resolve. He finally staggers toward civilization with the aid of a passing Arab, and there he discovers a glimmer of home—a Malayali restaurant run by Kunjikka, who nurses him back to health. The warmth of that small refuge becomes a turning point in a desperate odyssey.

Yet relief is short-lived. Najeeb faces legal trouble and imprisonment due to issues with his documentation, complicating any chance of a clean return. He encounters Khafeel again, but the encounter ends with him abandoned, as Khafeel is not his official sponsor and cannot reclaim him. Undeterred, Najeeb’s path eventually leads him back to his homeland, marking a hard-won return that’s driven by endurance and a quiet hope for belonging once more.

Along the way, the film threads in the quiet humanity of those who cross his path, including the resilience of Kunjikka, Nasar Karutheni, the Malayali restaurateur who becomes a lifeline in the desert’s aftermath. The story is a stark, immersive look at migration, survival, and the uneasy balance between dependence and autonomy in a world where luck, loyalty, and law pull in opposing directions.
