A group of friends reunites around a tabletop campaign, delving into a Pathfinder RPG world, even as real-life schedules fray and keep them apart for over a year. The spark of interest accelerates when Cass, a skeptic of collectible card games due to their cost and narrative gaps, meets the seasoned player Natalie and quickly finds himself drawn to her. To get close, he pretends to be a fellow player and enters the tournament, playing the role with growing enthusiasm.
In the game within the film, players choose one of the nine mighty empires of Countermay, and their choices—and the results of the tournaments—shape how the story unfolds in that fantasy realm. A powerful group known as The Legacy, who control the undead Ixhasa, begin to dominate the scene and push players away with their unpopular moves. Natalie plays for Holden, a small, peaceful agrarian kingdom, while Cass throws himself into the competition, hoping to prove himself. The two dynamics—real-world romance and in-game strategy—intertwine as Natalie initially rejects Cass, but after she loses a key match to a Legacy player, she tests him with a bold bet: if he wins the national tournament at Gen Con and places her Queen on the God Head seat of Countermay, she’ll date him. Her remark is sharp, but Cass chooses to treat it as a challenge worth pursuing, and he dives in with renewed purpose.
The film also weaves a parallel, painted-narrative layer that visually explains Countermay’s world while mirroring the real-world outcomes of the players’ decisions. As Cass commits more time to learning the game, he discovers that Leo—Scott C. Brown—has been an old, under-the-radar player who has since stepped back but is willing to mentor him. With Leo’s guidance, Cass hones his skills, climbs from a low level to becoming a credible threat, and the pair cross paths again at Gen Con. Natalie’s initial animosity softens as she witnesses the effort and skill he’s developed, and she begins to reconsider their future, even if she remains wary.
From there, Cass advances through the Swiss rounds and reaches the finals, where he meets Meach, the top player of Countermay. Their first face-off leaves Cass overwhelmed, but Meach proposes a strategic alliance: if Cass can win, Meach will allow Cass to appoint Meach’s king to the God Head Seat. Seizing the moment, Cass accepts the deal and ultimately wins the championship. In the aftermath, Natalie hints that she owes him a date, but Cass points out that he never truly placed her queen on the throne. Undeterred, Natalie offers to go on the date anyway, hinting at a new beginning for both on and off the table. The film layers the romance with a vivid fantasy landscape, where every move in the game carries weight in the real world, and where ambition, friendship, and a genuine connection collide in the most unexpected of finales.
