Beans, Billy Bletcher, is left to supervise his lively nephews, Ham and Ex, while their mother Lizzie is away, and he hopes to keep a calm watch over the buzzing firehouse. The trio carries big dreams of joining the firefighting ranks, and their curiosity soon turns the station into a playground where gears, hoses, and a gleaming fire engine become toys. Ham and Ex, Bernice Hansen, revel in the idea of sliding down the pole and touching every lever, and their enthusiasm quickly brushes against Beans’ patience as he tries to keep them in check.

To quiet the rambunctious pair, Beans seats them on a bench, hoping the order will settle them down. But the moment his back is turned, the children spring into action, nudging the fire alarm and waking the whole crew. The alarm blares through the station, and everyone stumbles to ready themselves, only to discover the disturbance was a false alarm once the kids return to reality and realize there was no real emergency at all.

With tension rising, Beans grounds Ham and Ex in the sleeping quarters, hoping the punishment will end the mischief.
