The body of policeman Dan Grady is recovered from the San Francisco Bay, lifeless and with clear indications of an execution. His close ally, Captain Street, deeply moved by the tragedy, seeks the aid of James Lee Wong and Bobbie Logan, a determined journalist, to solve the mystery.
Grady had been pursuing a lead on gemstone smuggling, and the trail points to a jeweler’s shop run by Frank Belden.
A witness places Dan at 8:30 p.m. the night before at Neptune Club, a disreputable joint run by Harry Lockett, a well-known cheater, con man, and smuggler.
From there, the investigation uncovers a ring of precious-stone trafficking centered around Neptune, involving the Neptune Club’s owner, the jeweler Belden Sr., and the vamp Tanya Serova.
Slowly, however, the members of the gang begin to fall, and the blame shifts toward Frank Belden Jr., the jeweler’s son and Tanya Serova’s boyfriend.
Wong’s persistence exposes the cunning ploy designed to trap the young man, revealing the mastermind behind the scheme—the gang’s head, John T. Forbes.
With the decisive collaboration of Miss Logan, Captain Street arrests Forbes and brings the case to a close.
Throughout, the film unfolds with a noir mood—smoky clubs and sharp double-crosses—yet it is carried forward by a patient, methodical deduction that slowly pieces together the truth behind Dan Grady’s death and the gem-smuggling ring.
