In 1777, just a year into his reign, King Jeongjo navigates a perilous palace life clouded by opposition and hidden political schemes. He moves through the days with careful, solitary discipline, training in the quiet corridors to brace for possible attacks. Though he is a calm and considerate ruler, fear gnaws at him, and the only solid anchor in this treacherous world is Gap-soo, the loyal court servant often called the king’s shadow.

Gap-soo’s past is a stark contrast to his present devotion. As a child, he was sold to a cruel man named Gwang-baek, who illegally trains orphaned children to become professional assassins. Gap-soo befriends Eul-soo, a younger companion who shares the same brutal upbringing. When Gwang-baek is ordered to offer one of his boys to the royal court as a eunuch, he forces Gap-soo and Eul-soo to settle their fate in a cruel game of rock-paper-scissors; Gap-soo deliberately loses to protect Eul-soo. The price is steep: Gap-soo is castrated and sent to the royal palace, where he meets [King Jeongjo], a young prince still mourning his father’s death, and begins a new, dangerous chapter in his life.

Years later, Eul-soo has risen to become the deadliest member of a secret circle of assassins. He receives an order to kill the king within 24 hours and infiltrates the palace to carry out the mission. In doing so, he encounters a forbidden attachment: Wol-hye, a kungnyŏ — a female court servant — whom he comes to love, adding a volatile layer to the palace’s already fraught power dynamics. The court’s shadows deepen as Lady Hyegyeong, Jeongjo’s mother, finds herself entangled in a fierce struggle with the late King Yeongjo’s much younger widow, Queen Jeongsun. The palace becomes a chessboard of loyalties and rivalries, where every move could change the course of the realm.
