Alexei Ivanov, a Stakhanovite smelter, is decorated by Stalin before party officials. When war erupts, he joins the Red Army with his fiancée, schoolteacher Natacha, quickly becoming a sergeant. German forces advance, Natacha is arrested and deported, but after the Soviet victory at Stalingrad a major offensive against Hitler begins.
