The Eternal Night of Twelve Moons 2013
Set on Colombia’s Guajira peninsula, this film explores the ancient customs of the Wayuu indigenous people. When young girls begin menstruating, they must spend a year in seclusion within a simple hut, visited only by a few women, and forbidden from contact with men. A grandmother guides the girl’s transition into womanhood during this time. Twelve-year-old Pili willingly embraces the tradition to honor her grandmother, but soon discovers the true challenges and significance of the ritual.
