The Color Wheel 2011

Colin Alex Ross Perry lives with his girlfriend Zoe Ry Russo-Young. His troubled sister JR Carlen Altman visits him with a clear request: she needs him to accompany her on a road trip to pick up her belongings from her ex-boyfriend, Neil Chadwick. Neil, a broadcasting professor at the college JR attended, used to share a life with JR until a breakup that also led JR to drop out of school. Colin reluctantly agrees, and the journey soon lays bare how bickering and sharp disagreements reveal deeper strains in JR’s relationship with her parents.

Their first night together unfolds in a motel that will only allow married couples to share a room because of the owner’s religious convictions. To keep up appearances, Colin and JR claim they are married, but the owner remains skeptical, prompting JR to kiss Colin in a moment that leaves him visibly grossed out. The next day they arrive at Neil’s place, where JR is surprised to discover another girl—appearing to be a student—in a relationship with Neil. Before Colin helps JR gather her belongings, the two share a tense, dramatic exchange with Neil that underscores the frictions that haunt their reunion.

In a diner, JR spots famous broadcaster Ms. Wagner Jody E. Smith and hopes for guidance, but she’s brushed aside, underscoring JR’s sense of stalled opportunity. Leaving the diner, JR unexpectedly reunites with her old best friend Julia Kate Lyn Sheil, who is accompanied by Kim [Anna Bak-Kvapil], Colin’s longtime crush. Julia invites JR to a party, hinting that a TV agent who is friends with Julia will be there, and JR agrees, nudging Colin to come along because Kim will be in attendance.

At the party, the anticipated agent never shows, and JR struggles to mingle with a circle of former friends who seem to have more success in life. Meanwhile, Colin gets into a scuffle with a few partygoers, and once the dust settles, he shares a kiss with Kim. JR discovers them together and a heated confrontation with Kim follows, leaving Colin visibly repulsed. The night shifts from tension to a fragile intimacy as JR and Colin put their differences aside, sharing a genuine connection that blossoms into a kiss and a quiet, intimate moment as they drift to sleep.

The following morning, JR drops Colin off at Zoe’s place, and as she prepares to drive away, the front door of Zoe’s house opens briefly, hinting that Colin might step back into the scene soon. The film lingers on these unresolved threads, balancing humor and discomfort while tracing the evolving, ambiguous bond between JR and Colin as they navigate a world of conflicting ambitions, failed connections, and fragile tenderness.
