Set in Zonguldak in 1941, the film follows two young poets, Muzaffer Tayyip Uslu and Rüştü Onur, portrayed by Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ and Mert Fırat. In a newly modernizing mining city, they juggle civil service duties with a burning passion for art and literature, each harboring a dream to rise as celebrated poets whose verses could lift the community. Their friendship is forged in a shared hunger for beauty, and their days are tinted by the rhythms of poetry read aloud, gatherings that nurture their ambitions, and the quiet competing urge to stand out in a country that is rebuilding itself.
As Europe bears the weight of World War II and Turkey’s young republic presses to redefine itself, the two hopefuls attempt to spark a broader love for poetry across a society that is still learning to mature in its tastes and expectations. The road to recognition, however, runs through a personal test: tuberculosis, a prevalent and terrifying shadow of the era, threatens their health and colorfully uncertain futures. In the midst of this, a striking girl enters their orbit—Suzan Özsoy Belçim Bilgin—and the two poets wager on who can win her heart through the power of verse. Suzan, though still in high school, becomes a bridge between the men, drawing closer to both despite her family’s disapproval and the tensions that come with pursuing art in difficult times.
The illness intensifies the stakes. Muzaffer and Rüştü face the relentless encroachment of their condition, with Rüştü’s health deteriorating enough to require hospitalization. It is within the hospital walls that he encounters Mediha Sessiz Farah Zeynep Abdullah, a fellow patient who also bears the weight of illness. What begins as a tender connection blossoms into a meaningful romance, offering a glimmer of hope and humanity amid the struggle for breath and belonging. Through these intertwined lives, the film paints a portrait of art as sustenance, love as a fragile escape, and friendship as a stubborn beacon against the encroaching gloom.
As the story unfolds, the characters navigate love, duty, and the shifting currents of a society in transition. The setting—a city at once industrial and intimate—frames a exploration of ambition against the backdrop of illness, family expectations, and the enduring pull of poetry. The narrative remains anchored in a grounded realism, letting moments of lyric beauty emerge from everyday resilience. It is a portrait of youth facing a world that is both expanding and uncertain, where art can illuminate even the darkest corners and where human connection offers a counterweight to the fragility of life.
