The Black Room 1982

In the Hollywood Hills, a bored suburban husband and father, Larry, secretly rents a room in a mansion owned by Bridget and her brother Jason, a pair whose life centers on a rare blood disorder that requires frequent transfusions. Larry uses his new lease to invite a string of willing women for secret trysts, all while Bridget and Jason observe the encounters through a hidden peephole, turning the property into a covert stage for their own troubling interest. Unbeknownst to Larry, after he leaves, Bridget and Jason capture his partners and drain their blood in an effort to prolong Jason’s life, a macabre routine that underscores the moral rot simmering beneath the surface of the house.

Meanwhile, Larry’s wife, Robin, discovers the affair, and her initial hurt hardens into a unsettling resolve. She decides to explore the same dangerous thrill by renting the infamous black room for her own sexual experimentation, an act that shifts the couple’s power dynamic in a way neither anticipated. As tension builds, Larry learns that Robin isn’t faithful either, and a volatile argument erupts as jealousy and anger collide with the facade of their agreed truce. Yet the nightmare intensifies when they uncover that Bridget and Jason have kidnapped their two children, intending to drain their blood to sustain Jason’s life. A desperate confrontation erupts, and the couple fights to reclaim their children, resulting in Bridget’s stabbing and Jason’s drowning in a bathtub filled with blood. They escape, battered but alive, with their kids in tow, leaving behind the perceived safety of their home. The film lingers on a disturbing final image: the two corpses refuse to stay dead, and Robin voices a chilling question about whether some people can ever truly die, even as the scene fades to black.
