Tag, a fox cub rescued from the woods and raised by huntsman Asher Smith, [Eric Porter], earns the nickname The Belstone Fox and grows into a clever, almost human presence around the local hunting grounds. He is kept in a pen among a litter of hound puppies, including Merlin, with whom Tag forms a close bond and learns to move with eerie awareness of human habits and the comings and goings of the hunt. Asher and Tod [Bill Travers] are fascinated by Tag, and the fox’s wily nature and knack for reading the humans in his world help him lead the pack and the hunters through many a “merry chase.” This unusual charisma lifts Tag to local celebrity, so much so that magazines begin to publish vivid accounts of his exploits and charm.

Merlin, at first not particularly drawn to the hunts, gradually becomes an active, protective hound for Tag, forming a loyal pair with the fox even as the others follow the master’s lead. The bond between the animals and the people around them deepens the sense of a fragile order within the field—one that blends affection with the instincts of pursuit. As Tag’s fame grows, the dynamic around the hunt club shifts in small, persistent ways, hinting at a tension between tradition and the changing attitudes of those who watch.

As the seasons change, Asher, now something of an aging figure within the club, remains mildly protective of the fox. That protectiveness is tested when Tag somehow leads the pack of hounds into the path of a train, causing the deaths of several animals and shocking the community. In the wake of the tragedy, the club resolves to shoot the fox to restore order, a decision that strikes at the heart of what many see as the natural order of life. Yet Asher, who has long wrestled with the line between sport and sympathy, seeks a different path: to bring down Tag in the approved manner, without firearms. The attempt ends tragically, as he collapses with a heart attack while trying to carry out the deed.

In the end, Tag’s world returns to silence beside the man who raised him, with Merlin nearby as the rescue party arrives. The image of the fox and his companion resting at their master’s side underscores a quiet, somber note in a story that is as much about loyalty and consequence as it is about cleverness and the lure of the chase.
