The Beloved Brat 1938

Roberta Morgan (Bonita Granville) grows up in a world of luxury, with parents who lavish gifts on her while largely ignoring her emotional needs. Her father, Mr. Morgan (Donald Crisp), and her mother, Mrs. Morgan (Natalie Moorhead), keep up a polished façade, but the warmth that a child craves is missing. The only adult who seems to notice her is the family’s secretary Williams, and the steady routine of their home does little to fill the gap.

She finds a friend in Pinkie White (Matthew Beard), a Black boy whose home radiates affection. Roberta is touched by the love Pinkie’s mother, Mrs White, shows Pinkie and by his sister Arabella White (Meredith White). Roberta invites Pinkie to dinner as a gesture of thanks, but Jenkins, the stern butler (Emmett Vogan), angrily throws Pinkie out.

When Roberta’s parents depart on a trip, her behavior grows worse. Jenkins locks her in her room; she sets a fire and escapes. He tracks her to Pinkie’s house, and on the return trip they argue in the car. Roberta grabs the steering wheel, sending their car into oncoming traffic and killing the driver.

The aftermath is harsh: Roberta tells the police that Jenkins was drinking, and the butler is convicted of manslaughter. Guilt gnaws at her, and she finally confesses that the accusation was a fabrication.

Roberta is sent to a special girls’ school run by Helen Cosgrove (Dolores Costello). There, she begins to change as she is asked to help younger students, and the environment offers a path toward accountability and care. When she is allowed to return home, she initially resists leaving, but her newfound perspective starts to influence her parents. Seeing their daughter’s growth, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan begin to reassess their approach to parenting, and the family’s dynamics slowly begin to heal.
