The Barber Shop 1933

Cornelius O’Hare is a laid-back barber who spends his days chatting on the shop porch, while his joke-loving son Ronald O’Hare keeps passersby entertained—much to the exasperation of Mrs. O’Hare. An energetic Italian vendor appears with a bass fiddle, hoping to sell it to Cornelius, but the barber already owns one he calls “Lena.” When the vendor leaves his fiddle behind in the shop, a playful misstep unfolds, setting the stage for a chain of goofy misadventures.

Inside the shop, Hortense, the manicurist, becomes a spark for Cornelius’s eccentric musical antics as he tries an unorthodox bass routine. While he shaves a customer, he audaciously locks a heavyset man in the steam room for a cheeky weight-loss stunt, warning him not to stay in too long. Distracted by Hortense’s presence, Cornelius forgets about the man in the steam room, and the patron emerges dramatically thinner, adding to the comic chaos.

Back at home, Mrs. O’Hare is irked by her husband’s antics and demands shopping money, announcing she’ll get a manicure—just not from Hortense. The situation spirals when an armed bank robber, portrayed by Cyril Ring, bursts into the shop, shoving a mother and child aside and forcing Cornelius to change his appearance. Nervous, Cornelius accidentally clips the robber’s ear, panics, and bolts on a stolen bicycle—only to loop back into the shop just as the robber steps outside.

In a surreal twist of fate, Ronald, a lively kid playing baseball in the street, lands a well-aimed hit that knocks out the robber, sending both the criminal and Cornelius tumbling into the shop. A nearby policeman reveals that Ronald is the real hero of the chaos, not the barber’s bravado. Then, as Cornelius picks up Lena and ears a strange sound, he discovers the bass has “given birth” to tiny violins. Disgusted, he hurls the Italian’s fiddle aside, and the day ends on a bizarre, dreamlike note that blends slapstick with the whimsical: a playful sendoff to a very unusual ordinary day.
