The Bachelor Party 1957

Charlie Samson, Don Murray, is a hard-working, married bookkeeper in Manhattan who is trying to advance himself by attending night school in accounting. He has just learned that his wife, Helen Samson, Patricia Smith, is pregnant with their first child, and this news deepens his sense of being tethered to a life he sometimes doubts he is ready to lead.

To celebrate Arnold Craig’s upcoming wedding, Charlie, along with three co-workers, throws a bachelor party for him, and Charlie is to be the best man. Arnold Craig, Philip Abbott, is joined by Walter, E.G. Marshall, an older married man with a recent asthma diagnosis, and Eddie, Jack Warden, a carefree bachelor who seems to have everything a man could want in life.

That night shifts from light-hearted mischief to deeper questions about loyalty and desire. The group watches a sequence of explicit stag films at a friend’s apartment, then bar-hops through the city. Charlie’s fidelity to his wife is tested when he becomes entangled with a young woman he meets on the street as they head to a bohemian Greenwich Village party, and the pull of temptation lingers even as he tries to resist.

Back home, Helen is disturbed to hear that her visiting sister-in-law Julie, Nancy Marchand, has a husband who has been unfaithful, adding another layer of worry to the evening’s events.

As the night wears on, Walter wanders off in despair, and Arnold, who has become very inebriated, voices doubt about his upcoming marriage. He phones home to cancel the wedding, only to sober up and rethink after Charlie gives him a candid argument in favor of married life—despite Charlie’s own surface regrets and his flirtation with the idea of leaving it all behind.

We end with Eddie, still at a bar, engaged in an incoherent conversation with an older alcoholic woman, a moment that underscores the loneliness he faces no matter how free he appears to be. In the final turning point, Charlie resolves that the steady, sometimes difficult work of building a life with Helen is meaningful and rewarding, and that marriage offers a true home, much more than the solitary path Eddie seems to chase.
