Thambi Vettothi Sundaram unfolds in Kaliyakkavilai, a border-town with a paradox: education is widespread, yet almost everyone is tangled in illegal trades—from smuggling to illicit liquor. This ironic mix challenges the belief that schooling alone can fix social evils; in this town, education exists alongside corruption. Sundaram [Karan] is one of the educated youths, smart and capable, but he finds it nearly impossible to forge a straightforward livelihood.

Feeling confused, vexed, and angry, he meets Aala [Saravanan], who seems to understand his troubles; together they form a lively, good-humored duo navigating the gray zones of the town. The film threads in a romantic thread as Lourd Mary [Anjali] falls for Sundaram, bringing warmth and tension to the story.

As the duo’s world intertwines with the town’s criminal underbelly, they cross paths with Pakku Paramasivam [Bala Singh], the don whose shadow looms over the community. The clash escalates into a brutal confrontation: the don burns Sundaram’s eyes with a mix of acid and chalk powder and also breaks part of his spine. Even as Sundaram fights and overcomes rivals, his injuries leave him blind and physically frail, unable to stand erect for more than a short time. The tragedy culminates in a suicide, with Sundaram lying beneath a moving bullock cart after his life of struggle and loss.

Two years later, Mary receives Sundaram’s appointment letter as a teacher, and her tears speak to the deep cost of love, loyalty, and the fight to redeem a society where education and crime coexist in uneasy proximity.
