It was at the Meena Bazar that Shehzada Khurram first laid eyes on Arjumand Banu / Mumtaz Mahal. It was love at first sight for both of them. Empress Nur Jahan, wife of Jahangir, learns of the match and grows furious, wishing Khurram to wed her daughter instead of Arjumand. She hatches plans to keep Arjumand apart: first trying to imprison her within the palace, then attempting to send Khurram off to battle, but each scheme fails. Khurram earns the title Shah Jehan upon his triumphant return. In a final bid to block the union, she has her stepson Saifuddin arrange Khurram’s murder, yet the conspiracy collapses once more.

Khurram returns home, wounded but alive, and keeps his injury secret from his father for fear of worrying him. When Jahangir learns of Arjumand’s decisive help, he blesses their marriage, and the couple are united. Saifuddin ends up marrying Ladli Banoo, the daughter Noor Jehan had hoped to pair with Khurram. Khurram is later sent away to govern another kingdom, while Noor Jehan continues to maneuver from the throne. As Jahangir’s health falters, Nur Jahan seizes power, declares Khurram an intruder, and dispatches armies to bring him in or to seize his two sons. The saga unfolds toward a timeless legend, culminating in the creation of one of the seven wonders of the world—the Taj Mahal.
