Cantinflas drifts through the city streets, a tuxedo from a local tailor framing his look and an advertisement pinned to his back. He also works as a tailor for his neighbors and lends a hand at the neighborhood dispensary, where Lita, Martha Valdés, serves as a nurse and where Father Feliciano, Domingo Soler, offers guidance and support. The film also gives a close look at Don Pascual Lachica, Ángel Garasa, an anguished millionaire whose family respects him mainly as a provider, a man whose wealth cannot hide the loneliness in his life.

One evening, after a long day, Cantinflas returns a tuxedo only to find the shop closed. With the ad removed and still impeccably dressed, he crosses paths with the wedding of Don Pascual’s daughter, an event that unexpectedly ties their fates together. Don Pascual, impressed by Cantinflas’s poise and the genuine warmth he shows, mistakes him for a wealthy man and offers him his friendship. That mistaken assumption becomes a doorway to compassion: through Cantinflas, Don Pascual discovers that his money—and his status—can be used to help the poor, and he begins to fund the charitable efforts Cantinflas champions in the neighborhood.

But the story darkens when Simón Sicario, the neighborhood’s malevolent figure, is murdered and robbed, casting Cantinflas under a cloud of suspicion. Cantinflas must navigate the trouble that follows, balancing his simple generosity with the weight of a crime he didn’t commit, all while trying to protect the people he’s come to care for. The tension escalates as the community grapples with trust, loyalty, and the idea that a man who dresses everyday as a sign of generosity might also bear the burden of being the prime suspect. In the end, the film holds fast to themes of kindness, community, and the ways in which one man’s sincere actions can ripple through a neighborhood, even as doubt and accusation threaten to upend the goodwill that has formed between Cantinflas and those he has touched.
