Sugar Bowman, Phyllis Davis, chooses two years of grueling labor on a sugar-cane plantation over a jail term on a trumped-up drug charge. She arrives with a new inmate, Simone Ellaraino, and immediately runs into Burgos Cliff Osmond, a brutal guard, and Dr. John Angus Duncan, the deranged plantation owner who conducts dangerous medical experiments.

Life on the plantation proves punishing from the start. The inmates spend endless days in the field, wielding machetes to cut cane under harsh conditions while Dr. John’s drug trials grow more invasive and unsettling. In one horrific turn, he rapes Dolores [Pamela Collins], the 17-year-old prisoner, revealing the callous brutality at the heart of his experiments.

Sugar’s resolve is tested further when she is caught in an intimate moment with Carlos [Darl Severns], a guard. She is ordered whipped, but Carlos refuses to betray her, and Burgos shoots him instead, underscoring the peril that surrounds every choice on the plantation.

Simone is a focal point for the others as they try to keep hope alive; Mojo [Timothy Brown], Simone’s love interest, is said to possess some vague voodoo powers that lend an aura of mystery to their plight. The tension escalates as Burgos captures Mojo, and Dr. John uses the moment to tighten his grip over the prisoners.

In a bold, desperate turn, Sugar, Simone, and Dolores team up with two additional guards to seize Dr. John and force an escape. The plan puts them on a volatile path toward freedom, but the chase is brutal and chaotic. During the escape attempt, Simone is shot and her jeep crashes alongside Dr. John. He loudly proclaims his immortality, only for Simone to shoot him and blow up the jeep, killing them both and blocking the exit so the others can flee in a truck.

With the escape tightened and the guards who aided them left behind, Sugar charts a risky path toward a new life. The final scene follows her walking down a town street, accompanied by two men, signaling that she has truly broken free from the plantation’s brutal hold and may be stepping into an uncertain, but hopeful, future.
