The film opens with Richie “Eagle” Stokes, Dick Gregory, a jazz musician who is jaded by how society treats him and seeks to numb himself with drugs, liquor and women. He crosses paths with David Hillary, Don Murray, a white former professor, when they both find themselves in a pawn shop. Hillary is distraught by the loss of his wife in a car accident, convinced that he is the cause of her death, and the two men bond over drinks until they are found by Keel Robinson, Robert Hooks, Stokes’s friend and former reverend. Robinson offers to provide Hillary a room in exchange for working at the coffee shop he owns.

Robinson and Hillary locate Stokes at Candy’s, Jeri Archer, house, overdosed but not yet dead. From there, the narrative deepens the examination of Robinson and his girlfriend Della, Diane Varsi, as they navigate doubts and fears about interracial discrimination. While Hillary waits for a job interview for a professor position, Stokes is accosted by a policeman. Hillary had seen the altercation from afar but had done nothing to help him. When Stokes discovers this, he vents and seeks solace with Candy.

Stokes passes away that night from a heroin overdose, but Robinson says that the cause of death was,

Hillary and Robinson part their ways, leaving a sober, uncomfortable portrait of friendship stretched thin by prejudice, guilt, and the heavy weight of living with a harsh social reality.
