Meenakshi, Bhanupriya, and Savitri, Devilalitha, are daughters of Vedantam Seshendra Sarma, a Kuchipudi doyen. Although he is highly accomplished in his field, money is tight and he cannot provide his daughters with a conventional education. Savitri excels in Carnatic classical music, while Meenakshi shines in classical dance, each reaching a notable level of mastery.

Savitri, the elder sister, is grateful for her knowledge and passion and looks forward to a life that will require her to hone her art further. Meenakshi, however, feels stifled by the limited opportunities for dance in India and resolves to forge a simpler, more joyful life as soon as possible, confiding her ambitions only to her sister.

Chandrasekhar, Venkatesh, a tenant who has just moved in next door, is a painter who also handles much of the promotional work for films. He develops an interest in the neighbors and offers help, partly because of an unspoken affection for Meenakshi and partly out of a genuine curiosity about the arts that seem to be fading from public life.

The rest of the film centers on Meenakshi’s journey from skepticism to devotion in her pursuit of dance. Chandrasekhar emerges as an important catalyst in this transformation. Under the guidance of a renowned Odissi dancer, Meenakshi becomes an accomplished performer and earns the opportunity to travel to the United States to showcase her art. Along the way, she discovers Chandrasekhar’s love for her, and in the end the two unite, with Meenakshi also confessing her love in return.
