Two rival camps occupy California’s Sierra Madre Mountain: the Blue Legion, a gun-happy squad of teenaged boys led by tyrannical survivalist Jake Cannon [Mark Rolston], and Survival Quest, a backpacking self-help group guided by the humane mountain man Hank Chambers [Lance Henriksen]. Hank’s lessons reach Cheryl [Catherine Keener], Joey [Paul Provenza], and Gray [Dermot Mulroney], as he teaches them to rely on teamwork, respect, and practical skills beneath the sheltering pines. The two groups cross paths as Jake’s harsh curriculum sometimes spills into harassment of the Survival Questers, testing everyone’s nerves.
After a particularly tense incident, a volatile Blue Legion member named Raider [Steve Antin] shoots Hank, a blow that redirects the conflict and reveals the vulnerability beneath Jake’s command. Jake confronts Raider, tries to stop the violence, and Raider fights back by stabbing Jake and blaming Survival Quest. The act fractures the fragile balance of power, and Raider seizes control of the Blue Legion’s plan to wipe out the rival campers.
With Hank presumed dead, Cheryl assumes leadership of Survival Quest, and the escape plan becomes a desperate race to reach the nearest airstrip. The two groups flee through forests and along rivers, seeking safety and a path home. In a decisive turn, Gray lures Raider to a fuel-safe setup, then fires at a flammable tank with a shotgun, causing a massive explosion that kills Raider and provides cover for the survivors to press on.
In the smoke and chaos, help arrives in the form of Hank aboard an airplane, having survived his injuries and signaling for rescue after trying to aid Jake, who has died in the earlier struggle. The survivors are left to reflect on the consequences of the conflict, the choices each group made, and the fragile thread that can still connect people in the mountains.
