Three high school students, Tomoya Sugisaki, Aoi Harukawa, and Ryō Kobayashi, connected by a thread of online chatter, set out to test a whispered legend: the “Summer Ghost” who supposedly appears at night on an abandoned airfield when fireworks blaze overhead. The eerie rumor becomes reality when a pale figure materializes under the glow of the night sky, revealing herself as a young woman named Ayane Sato. Ayane explains a chilling condition—she can only be seen by people who have already reached toward death in some form. From this point, the story moves through quiet, revealing flashbacks that tie each of the friends to that threshold in their own lives: Tomoya is pressed by a controlling mother to give up his art and chase conventional academics; Aoi endures bullying that pushes her toward despair; Ryō carries a terminal illness with a ticking clock on his future.

Tomoya’s return to Ayane deepens the mystery and intensifies the emotional pull of the legend: he learns that Ayane died after being struck by a car, and the driver buried her in a suitcase to escape accountability. This revelation transforms Tomoya’s curiosity into a consuming mission—to help Ayane find her body and bring closure to her grieving mother. When Aoi happens to cross paths with Tomoya again, she and Ryō decide to join the effort, lending their support and risking their own safety in pursuit of the truth. The trio’s perseverance pays off as they uncover the physical remains of Ayane, a discovery that finally allows her mother to grieve properly and lays the groundwork for a sense of peace to settle over the lingering mystery.

A year passes, and summer returns to the airfield where it all began. The late chapters of their friendship reveal a transformed trio: Tomoya has found the voice to resist his mother’s pressure and to pursue his artistic dreams with renewed courage; Aoi has grown enough confidence to face her bullies; and Ryō’s illness remains a shadow, yet his presence continues to shape the bond between them. In a poignant moment, they gather again at the field, now fully aware of the cost of their journey. Ryō dies in a hospital, but not alone—his friends stand by him as he crosses the boundary in their shared moment of farewell. They come to the airfield once more, not just to remember, but to meet him as a ghost, a quiet, enduring presence that completes their circle and cements the deeper meaning of their friendship.
