Nicole Picot, Claire Nadeau, a model for a fashionable Paris dress shop, is recruited in 1931 by the nearly penniless financier-turned-tycoon Stéphane Orloff, Benjamin Rolland, to help win backing for his ambitious plans. The arrangement sets a tone of uneasy alliance, as Nicole becomes drawn into a world where money and influence intertwine with fashion, privilege, and danger. As the years progress to 1934, Stéphane has built an investment bank and, in a gesture of gratitude, supplies the capital Nicole needs to launch her own fashion house, even though she insists on paying him back. This turning point promises independence and success, but it also tethers her to Stéphane’s orbit and his shadowy dealings.

Nicole’s path is complicated by the counsel of her longtime friend Danièle, Bernadette Lafont, who warns that associating with Stéphane could lead to ruin. Danièle fears the price of power and opulence, while Nicole, buoyed by the dream of becoming a celebrated modiste, chooses to ignore the growing warnings. In parallel, a romance blooms with the British diplomat Anthony Wayne, a relationship that offers Nicole warmth and a potential escape from the darker undertow of Stéphane’s world.

Yet the fabric of their lives begins to unravel in 1936 as Stéphane’s crooked schemes threaten exposure. He proposes a marriage to Nicole but keeps the real motive hidden: he believes a public wedding, attended by her influential circle, will bolster his public image and buy him time. Nicole agrees, moved by friendship rather than romance, a choice that strains Suzanne’s loyalty and judgment. The wedding scene becomes a turning point when Stéphane’s closest associate, Francis Chalon, is arrested for questioning, and guests hastily depart, signaling that the endgame has begun.

With the net tightening, Stéphane retreats to a remote château, and a perilous miscalculation follows—a letter inviting Nicole to join him is sent. Despite Anthony’s protests, Nicole travels to the secluded estate, determined to confront the truth. There, Stéphane admits the machine of deceit but insists his feelings for Nicole are genuine, complicating her sense of betrayal and duty. When law enforcement closes in on the château, Stéphane makes a self-sacrificing choice: he steps into the open to spare Nicole from becoming entangled in his downfall, and is shot. The police stage the death as a suicide to avoid further embarrassment to the government.

Back in Paris, Nicole embraces a costly sense of responsibility. She chooses to repay those whom Stéphane defrauded, even though French law does not require her to do so, and this act bankrupts her fashion house. Nicole and Suzanne find themselves back at the starting line, their consciences clear and their independence earned, if at great personal cost. In the film’s conclusion, Anthony arrives as the women are packing up their office, and Nicole agrees to marry him, reassured that her future need not be defined by past transgressions or a shadowed reputation.
