In a dingy apartment complex, 12-year-old Charlotte (character) navigates a life of isolation and neglect, left to her own devices as she struggles to connect with her overworked step-father, Ethan. Her love for comic books becomes a fleeting escape from the harsh realities of her daily existence. But one fateful night, everything changes when a glowing object crashes into her great-aunt's apartment, releasing a tiny spider that Charlotte names Sting. As she tends to the unusual pet, Sting begins an astonishing growth spurt, its hunger insatiable and its size impossible to conceal.

As Ethan and their neighbors start to notice strange occurrences around the building, Charlotte initially keeps Sting's enormous size a secret, but it soon becomes impossible to hide. The spider's monstrous appetite leads to the tragic demise of pets and residents, straining Charlotte's already fragile relationship with her step-father.
