In Granada TV’s 1974 production Starmaker, Kinks frontman Ray Davies creates a televised rock‑opera in which he plays a vain rock star who trades places with an ordinary man named Norman, taking on Norman’s dull job and life to spark inspiration for his next album. The piece constantly breaks the fourth wall, with visible cameras, microphones and even Davies appearing as an audience member, foreshadowing the themes later explored on The Kinks’ 1975 album The Kinks Present a Soap Opera.
